Serving Patients & Families
At the heart of our work are the pregnant women, babies and families we serve. The Center focuses on helping patients with high-risk pregnancies and families with medically fragile infants to navigate a complex health care system, working with them to make sure they are receiving the best care and support available. This includes helping them:
- understand their diagnosis
- have the information they need to make important decisions
- have access to specialists who put best practice in play every day
- are connected to resources that will provide them with the support they need
- are equipped to work with a health care team to maximize the health outcome for themselves and their babies.
Serving Physicians
A core component of the Center for Maternal and Infant Health is collaboration with physicians who refer high-risk pregnant women to UNC and to pediatricians who both refer medically fragile babies to UNC and accept them into their practice at discharge. The Center is also available to provide opportunities for professionals seeking ways to improve systems of care around disease specific conditions and researchers who wish to learn how to prevent or improve treatment around these varied and serious health problems. We continue to work to determine, promote and adopt best practice models of care.
The Center's team of specialists designs care plans tailored to the unique needs of a particular family, pregnancy, fetus and infant. The goals are to a) apply the team’s collective knowledge and skills to maximize the health outcome for complicated pregnancies and high-risk babies, b) guide the patient smoothly and efficiently through the UNC Health Care System, c) support a seamless interchange between referring physicians and hospital based staff, d) continuously seek to improve systems of care to maximize resources and, e) empower families to be proactive in regard to their health and that of their baby both during their time as patients at UNC Hospitals and beyond.
Serving The State
The Center takes its role as a part of the state health care system seriously. UNC Center staff and its partners serve on statewide infant mortality prevention committees and public health campaigns. The Center’s staff continues to engage in efforts to support prevention at all levels. This includes primary prevention to reduce the incidence of birth defects and premature birth as well as secondary and tertiary prevention which improves outcome for mothers and babies who are at risk and/or sick. Additionally, the Center has an internship program in partnership with the UNC School of Public Health and the UNC School of Social Work.
Funding
The Center for Maternal and Infant Health team receives support from the Department of OB/GYN, UNC Health Care, the Office of the Dean of the School of Medicine, and through Foundations and Agencies such as the Division of Public Health, the March of Dimes, the North Carolina Health and Wellness Trust Fund, and the John Rex Endowment.
