The Center for Maternal and Infant Health is currently led by an Executive Director and two Co-Directors. The Center also turns to a large number of colleagues and partners for advice and support.

Sarah Verbiest, DrPH, MSW, MPH began her work with the Center in September 2004. As Executive Director she is focused on supporting the strong collaborative effort which the Center represents. To contact her email sarahv@med.unc.edu or call 919-843-7865.

Wayne Price, MD, represents the UNC Department of Pediatrics where he serves as the Director for the Division of Neonatal Perinatal Medicine. The partnership between pediatrics and OB/GYN has been critical to providing comprehensive and coordinated care.

Kate Menard, MD, MPH represents the UNC Department of OB/GYN where she serves as the Director for the Division of Maternal Fetal Medicine as well as Professor and Vice Chair of OB/GYN. The OB/GYN Department has been an integral partner to the Center, including the provision of financial support.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery is also a key partner with the Center for Maternal and Infant Health.

 

 

Lisa Welborn, LCSW

Lisa Welborn is a licensed clinical social worker who is fluent in English and Spanish. She has many years of experience working with both low risk and high risk pregnant women, babies and in communities. As a perinatal care specialist, Lisa works with families and their providers, both at UNC and in the community. Lori Carter, RN, BSN

Lori Carter is a registered nurse with 14 years of experience working in the UNC Newborn Critical Care Center. She has been providing out-patient care coordination for complex infants for many years. Kim Hamden, MSN

Kim Hamden is a nurse midwife with expertise in women's health. She is working with the Center's Postpartum Plus Prevention Program (P4). This program works with the mothers of babies in the Newborn Critical Care Center. Kim also has a postpartum clinic on Wednesday afternoons. Mary Heintz, RN, CCM, MS

Mary Heintz serves as a Public Health Maternity Care Coordinator. Her role includes coordinating the Maternal Transport Program and facilitating communication between the NC Women's Hospital and the health care providers and 16 clinics who send their patients to UNC for high-risk care and labor/delivery. Mary has many years of experience both in front line nursing and in state level public health service. Mary can be reached at 919-843-7863.

 

Dennis Rodriguez, MS

Dennis is responsible for maintaining this website as well as many databases at UNC. He designed the Center’s special database called Pericare and provides IT assistance to our staff.
